Laura McEvoy

Laura McEvoy offers exceptional Eventing training for all riders and horses from beginners through the FEI levels. Additionally, she is an outstanding trainer of award winning Eventing horses and riders.

Eventing

Laura has been teaching and training for over 30 years. She began riding at 6 years of age at camps before finally convincing her parents to enroll her in weekly hunter/jumper lessons. She was in college when she discovered Eventing and she was immediately hooked!

Laura spent several years as a working student at Oakridge Training Stables in California under the tutelage of Yves Sauvignon, eventually being promoted to Assistant Trainer. She had the opportunity to care for and work with over 100 horses of varying breeds and abilities and to truly hone her horsemanship skills.

Teaching

Laura has a special gift as a teacher and is able to adapt her teaching style to meet the needs of every rider’s specific way of learning. With her vast knowledge, and being able to pull from her experiences riding with some of the top trainers in the country, she can find the optimal way to teach each individual. The result is a happy and successful rider who confidently reaches his or her goals and is able to set new ones to achieve.

Juniors and Young Riders

Laura has brought numerous juniors and young riders up the levels of Eventing with great success. Her young clients love her positive attitude and learn much more than riding from her. She is also a wonderful mentor teaching her students to have an incredible work ethic while additionally imparting many other life skills that they find invaluable in all aspects of their future. Laura has numerous regional and national champions among her juniors and young riders!

Eventing Awards

Laura’s successes in the show ring have brought numerous awards for multiple horses up through the levels.  Some of her awards include Advanced Level Reserve Champion – Western Region; Intermediate Champion Area VI; Professional Intermediate Champion and Reserve Champion Area V; Professional Preliminary Champion and Reserve Champion Area V; Intermediate and Preliminary Reserve Champion Adult Riders Area V, among others.

Adult Amateurs

Laura’s adult clients find her teaching to be extremely informative, logical and results oriented. Her lessons are fun yet goal-focused. She teaches all of her clients how to take ownership of every situation with their horse giving confidence and success to her riders. She has many adult amateurs who have achieved success in the show ring.  And while showing is important to many adult amateurs, Laura also has clients who enjoy a less competitive style and find the journey of training just as rewarding.

Dressage

While Eventing – especially cross country – is Laura’s passion, she also enjoys continuing to expand her knowledge base and skill in Dressage. Already an accomplished Dressage rider and trainer, Laura enjoys attending as many educational clinics as she can. Ever keen to have lessons herself whenever possible! She has competed very successfully through 3rd Level dressage with several High Point Awards under her belt. She has completed the requirements for her USDF Bronze medal and is well on her way towards her Silver medal.

Jumping

Success in stadium jumping in the Jumper show ring is part of Laura’s trifecta strategy that boosts her success as an Eventer.  She enjoys competing in the Jumper ring and has competed through 1.30m.  Laura believes eventers and their mounts need to be triathletes and practice all aspects of the sport – dressage, stadium jumping, and cross country – to develop mastery of all three phases.

Student Successes

Laura enjoys teaching students of all levels and working with all types of horses.  Many have won championships and competed successfully from Beginner Novice through the Two-Star level. With the aid of Laura’s thoughtful coaching and training, her students have enjoyed many accomplishments including a pony ridden up to the Preliminary Level – winning many Horse Trials and coming in 3rd at The Preliminary Challenge against a large field of accomplished professionals. Another student won the California Dressage Society Championship Training Division, and the following year the First-Level Division, on her retired-from-eventing OTTB.

During the time Laura worked with me, she was able to find me both an amazing horse to lease and ultimately the perfect horse to own. Laura’s love of horses and people is evident in all that she does. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had Laura as a trainer. She taught me everything and I am thoroughly grateful!”
